Winnie Odinga Endorses Call To Deputise Her Uncle Oburu Odinga In ODM

Delegates from Nairobi County have endorsed Winnie Odinga for a proposed deputy party leader position within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), signaling a significant shift in the party’s leadership dynamics ahead of its upcoming National Delegates Convention (NDC).

The endorsement, led by Makadara MP George Aladwa, follows a proposal to amend the ODM constitution to introduce a fourth deputy party leader slot specifically reserved for women.

Currently, the party has three deputy leaders, and the proposed change is aimed at enhancing inclusivity while strengthening Nairobi’s representation within the party’s top decision-making organ.

Aladwa revealed that leaders from all 17 constituencies in Nairobi had unanimously backed Winnie’s nomination after weeks of consultations.

He argued that her appointment would help fill the leadership gap left following the absence of her father, Raila Odinga, in the party’s National Executive Council (NEC). According to the MP, Nairobi requires a strong voice at the top table, and Winnie is best placed to take up that role.

Speaking after the endorsement, Winnie welcomed the move and expressed readiness to serve if the proposal is formally adopted.

She reaffirmed her commitment to ODM, describing the party as a legacy built over many years. Her remarks also appeared to distance her from internal dissenting factions, as she emphasized unity and continuity within the party.

“I didn’t expect the nomination, but since Nairobi leaders have agreed, I am ready to take up the responsibility,” she said, signaling her willingness to step into a more prominent leadership role.

The development comes ahead of the ODM Special Delegates Convention scheduled for March 27 in Nairobi.

The high-stakes meeting is expected to bring together members of the National Executive Committee, parliamentary caucus, governors, and representatives from various party leagues and county structures.

Key agenda items at the convention will include discussions on party leadership, governance reforms, and the ratification of resolutions previously adopted by ODM’s top organs.

While the official program does not list elections, the gathering is widely seen as a निर्णायक moment for the party as it navigates internal realignments in a post-Raila era.
