Babu Owino Urges Winnie Odinga to Reconsider ODM Role After Endorsement

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has reacted to the recent endorsement of Winnie Odinga for the deputy party leader position within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), urging her to rethink her political direction.

Winnie Odinga’s endorsement by Nairobi delegates ahead of the party’s National Delegates Convention (NDC) marked a significant step in her political journey.

She accepted the nomination and expressed readiness to represent the interests of Nairobi members within the party’s top leadership structures, signaling loyalty to ODM and its future.

However, her decision has sparked mixed reactions across the political divide. Babu Owino, a vocal figure in Nairobi politics, publicly appealed to Winnie to reconsider aligning herself fully with the ODM leadership structure.

Instead, he encouraged her to explore alternative political formations, specifically pointing to the “Linda Mwananchi” movement as a more suitable platform.

According to Owino, the emerging political outfit offers a fresh approach that resonates more with the aspirations of ordinary citizens.

His remarks suggest underlying divisions within ODM ranks, particularly among younger leaders and reform-leaning factions who are pushing for a shift in the party’s direction.

The call by Owino highlights growing internal contestation within ODM as it undergoes transition and reorganization.

With the absence of long-time party leader Raila Odinga from active leadership, different camps are increasingly positioning themselves to shape the party’s future ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Winnie, however, has maintained a firm stance, indicating her willingness to take up the leadership role if formally approved during the NDC.

She emphasized unity and continuity, noting that the party remains a key political vehicle built over many years.

Owino’s remarks have since triggered widespread reactions among Kenyans, especially on social media, with some supporting his call for political realignment while others backing Winnie’s decision to remain within ODM and rise through its ranks.
