Wahome Thuku has caused mixed reactions after claiming that the Mt Kenya region may have far fewer political options in the 2027 elections than many people assume.
According to Thuku, even if Kalonzo Musyoka and Dr. Fred Matiang'i were to completely sideline the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and avoid campaigning in the region altogether, Mt Kenya voters would still show up at the polling stations and their choices would remain limited.
Thuku argued that the voting patterns in the mountain are already shaping themselves around a small pool of national figures, and the region would ultimately have to choose between Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i or President William Ruto on election day.
The only other potential candidate from the region, he added, would likely be activist Boniface Mwangi who has grown vocal over national politics.
He stated that it is a misplaced perception that Mt. Kenya needs heavy mobilization from the outside leaders, adding that even without rallies from Kalonzo or Matiang’i, the region would still make its way to the polls and make a decision among the few available options.
Thuku painted a grim picture of the political moment Mt Kenya finds itself in, terming it "the worst moment in the history of elections in this country."
He suggested that the region, once known for producing strong presidential contenders, now faces an election cycle where none of its own commands a clear national path leaving voters with choices shaped almost entirely by external political forces.
His comments have revived talk of succession politics, Mt Kenya's waning influence and the changing dynamics going into 2027.
