"Desperate Search" Several Workers Trapped as 22-storey Westlands Building Collapses

A tragic construction accident has shaken Nairobi after a 22-storey building under construction collapsed in the upscale Westlands area, leaving workers trapped beneath the rubble.

The incident, which occurred along School Lane near the Bank of Africa, has raised fresh concerns over construction safety standards in the country.

According to Kenya Red Cross, four workers were at the site when the structure gave way. Two of them managed to escape unharmed, while two others remain trapped under the debris.

Emergency response teams were quickly deployed and have been working tirelessly to locate and rescue the missing workers, though their condition remains unknown.

In a statement, the humanitarian agency confirmed that search and rescue operations are ongoing, with personnel using specialized equipment to navigate the wreckage.

The situation remains delicate, as rescuers must balance speed with caution to avoid further collapse or injury.

The Westlands incident comes barely hours after another building collapse was reported in Kericho County, highlighting a worrying pattern.

In Kaptebeswet area, a structure under construction caved in, trapping several العمال beneath steel and fresh concrete.

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai confirmed that at least 22 individuals were inside the building at the time. Rescue teams managed to pull out 17 people, while five were initially trapped.

Sadly, one person later died while receiving treatment at Kericho County Referral Hospital, while the remaining four survivors are reported to be in stable condition.

Preliminary findings from the Kericho site suggest possible structural weaknesses, including the use of substandard materials such as weak steel rods and poorly reinforced pillars.

Witnesses also pointed out that heavy slabs may not have been properly supported, potentially contributing to the collapse.

Meanwhile, in Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo area, families are still mourning victims of a previous building collapse, underlining the recurring nature of such tragedies.

The deaths of two brothers, who had traveled to the city in search of work, have added a human face to the ongoing crisis.
