Orengo, Babu Owino Alliance Signals Deepening ODM Rift Ahead of Mombasa Tour

A fresh political storm is brewing within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after Siaya Governor James Orengo held a strategic meeting with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, signaling a growing push by a dissenting faction within the party.

The high-level meeting, which comes shortly after the endorsement of Winnie Odinga for a deputy party leader position, is seen as part of wider efforts by the “Linda Mwananchi” group to consolidate influence ahead of a planned political tour in Mombasa.

The two leaders are expected to be joined by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, forming a powerful bloc that has increasingly positioned itself as a reformist wing within ODM.

Supporters of the faction have branded the upcoming visit as a “liberation mission,” aimed at reconnecting with grassroots supporters and redefining the party’s future direction.

Mombasa, long regarded as an ODM stronghold and Kenya’s second-largest city, has been strategically chosen for the tour.

Political observers note that influence in the coastal region often carries symbolic and electoral significance, particularly as parties begin early preparations for the 2027 General Election.

However, the planned visit has already sparked tensions. Pro-establishment voices within ODM, aligned with party leader Oburu Oginga, have warned the group against what they term as divisive politics.

Some activists have openly opposed the visit, arguing that it risks destabilizing party unity and disrupting peace in the region.

Despite the resistance, local supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement have defended the planned rally, citing their constitutional right to assemble and mobilize politically. The standoff underscores the widening ideological and leadership divisions within the party.

Caught in the middle is Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, who also serves as ODM’s deputy party leader.

Nassir has taken a cautious stance—welcoming the leaders to the county while urging all sides to maintain peace and avoid confrontation.

His response reflects the delicate balance between preserving party cohesion and ensuring regional stability.

Meanwhile, Orengo has dismissed speculation of a potential exit from ODM, maintaining that the Linda Mwananchi faction remains a legitimate caucus within the party.

Nonetheless, murmurs of possible breakaway formations such as “ODM Fresh” or “ODM Asili” continue to grow louder among grassroots supporters.
