Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Ichung'wah took issue with remarks made by opposition figures ahead of the commemorations, claiming some leaders had hoped to take political advantage of the day.
The Majority Leader first targeted Gachagua:
"I saw a former Vice President of this country celebrating that there is a public holiday today in the country. And you dare tell the people of Kenya you want to be a president? If you have nothing to do, let Kenyans work. Kenyans want to work," he said.
Ichung'wah also criticised former Mathere MP, referring to remarks about asking supporters to stay at home and avoid joining demonstrations.
According to the Kikuyu MP, such statements exposed those he claimed had previously mobilised people involved in destruction during protests.
"It is evident now who it is that mobilizes goons to come and torch people's buildings in the CBD. It is evident who was mobilizing people to torch buildings, public buildings," he stated.
The Majority Leader, however, reserved praise for young Kenyans, saying many had become more critical of political messaging and misinformation.
"And I must take this opportunity to thank the people of Kenya, especially young Kenyans who have seen through the hypocrisy and the scavenging nature of this group of politicians," he said.
Ichung'wah further argued that young people had reflected on issues surrounding the Finance Bill and were now engaging more with facts rather than propaganda.
He concluded by thanking Kenyans for what he described as separating "propaganda and lies from the truth" during discussions on national issues.
