“ODM Must Be Led by a Fearless Person” – Orengo Says Any Deal With Ruto Must Include Presidency Talks

Siaya Governor James Orengo has sparked fresh debate within Kenya's political landscape after declaring that any political cooperation between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and President William Ruto must be based on equal terms, including discussions about the country's top seat.

Speaking at a political gathering in Mbita, Homa Bay County, Orengo made it clear that ODM should not enter into any alliance from a position of weakness.

According to the veteran politician, the party remains one of the strongest political formations in the country and deserves to negotiate as an equal partner in any future arrangement.

His remarks come amid growing speculation over possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election and continued debate about the relationship between ODM and the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“If I am to join Ruto, we must negotiate for presidency,” Orengo told supporters, a statement that immediately attracted attention from political observers and party supporters across the country.

The governor argued that ODM's political strength, support base, and history in Kenya's democratic struggle should not be overlooked in any coalition discussions.

He suggested that the party must protect its identity and ensure that its interests are fully represented whenever political negotiations take place.

Orengo also stressed the need for strong and courageous leadership within ODM. According to him, the party requires leaders who can defend its principles, maintain its independence, and safeguard its future in a rapidly changing political environment.

“ODM must be led by a fearless person,” he said, emphasizing that party leaders should be willing to stand firm on issues affecting members and supporters.

The remarks are likely to reignite discussions about the direction ODM should take ahead of the next election.

While some leaders within the party have supported cooperation with President Ruto's administration on specific national issues, others have remained skeptical and have consistently called for the party to maintain its opposition identity.

Orengo has emerged as one of the most vocal leaders questioning the nature of engagement between ODM and the government.

In recent months, he has repeatedly insisted that the party must remain accountable to its supporters and avoid political arrangements that could weaken its influence.

Political analysts say the governor's comments reflect ongoing internal conversations within ODM regarding succession, coalition building, and the party's strategy for 2027.

Some observers believe his remarks were intended to strengthen ODM's bargaining position, while others see them as an indication of deeper concerns about the party's future direction.

As the country moves closer to another election cycle, discussions around alliances and coalition politics are expected to intensify.

The possibility of new partnerships, opposition unity, and negotiations between major political players continues to dominate national political conversations.
