“Tutam” Chants Erupt at Burial Ceremony Attended by Opposition Leaders in Nandi

A burial ceremony in Nandi County on Saturday, March 14, turned briefly political after chants associated with the government erupted while several opposition leaders were present.

The ceremony was held to honor the late Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) George Were, a veteran pilot who died in a tragic helicopter crash on February 28.

Leaders from both the government and opposition joined family members, friends, and residents to pay their final respects to the fallen pilot.

Among the opposition figures present were Eugene Wamalwa and Martha Karua, who attended the funeral to show solidarity with the bereaved family and the community.

However, the solemn event momentarily shifted in tone when mourners began chanting “Tutam,” a political slogan commonly associated with supporters of President William Ruto and his administration.

Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi was heard interacting with the crowd as the chants intensified.

In a video circulating online, Sudi asks the crowd what they were chanting, prompting louder responses from the mourners.

He then encouraged them to raise their voices even more so that the opposition leaders attending the burial could hear the chants clearly.

The moment quickly drew attention online, with many Kenyans debating whether political slogans were appropriate during a funeral ceremony.

Also present at the burial was Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, alongside other leaders and community members who had gathered to honor the late pilot.

Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) George Were was piloting a helicopter with registration number 5Y-DSB when it crashed in the Chepkiep area of Nandi County. The aircraft reportedly burst into flames after the crash, resulting in multiple fatalities.

The tragic accident claimed six lives, including that of Johanna Ng'eno, leaving the nation mourning the loss of experienced professionals and leaders.

Despite the brief political chants, the burial ceremony largely focused on celebrating the life and service of the veteran pilot, with speakers remembering him as a dedicated aviator who served the country with distinction.

The gathering brought together leaders from across the political divide, reflecting a rare moment of unity as Kenyans came together to mourn those who lost their lives in the tragic helicopter crash.
