Chaos erupted on Tuesday afternoon during the United Opposition’s political gathering in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
After suspected hired goons attempted to disrupt the rally.
The rally, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, attracted hundreds of residents who had gathered by the roadside to listen to opposition leaders rally support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gachagua was flanked by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP–Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, among others.
The situation turned chaotic moments after Wamalwa took the microphone to address the charged crowd.
Eyewitnesses said a group of rowdy youths started pelting stones and shouting down the leaders, forcing Gachagua’s security detail to intervene swiftly to restore order.
Police officers on the ground fired several warning shots into the air to disperse the attackers, sending the crowd into confusion as people scampered for safety.
Several chairs were overturned, and a few vehicles belonging to the leaders’ entourage were reportedly damaged during the melee.
Speaking after calm was restored, Wamalwa condemned the incident, accusing “state-sponsored agents” of attempting to silence the growing opposition movement.
“This is a clear attempt to intimidate us. But we will not be silenced.
Kenyans must be free to assemble and speak their minds without fear,” Wamalwa said.
Gachagua, who has recently emerged as a key figure in the opposition coalition, also weighed in, calling for restraint and unity.
“We are building a movement of hope, not hate. Let us reject violence and focus on liberating our nation through the ballot,” he urged the crowd.
Kalonzo Musyoka echoed the same sentiments, saying that the opposition’s resolve to hold the government accountable would not be shaken by acts of provocation.
No serious injuries were reported by the time of publishing, though police said investigations were underway to establish who was behind the attack and whether it was politically motivated.
The Gilgil rally was part of a series of planned county tours by the United Opposition Movement.
Which brings together leaders formerly aligned to Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions, in a bid to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 polls.
