Political analysts opine that the Mt Kenya region has dumped President Ruto, and therefore, he should pick a running mate from either Nyanza or Western Kenya. This is how the Head of State might make the final decision:
If the United Opposition gives Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna the presidential ticket, he will surely lock Western Kenya, which is his backyard.
Ruto might then keep Kindiki to retain Mt Kenya East votes. This will enable Kindiki to appeal to the people of Mt Kenya to support him when it matters.
If the opposition picks Kalonzo Musyoka as the presidential candidate and Sifuna as the running mate, Ruto might respond by choosing Wycliffe Oparanya to deputise him.
This will help Ruto beat the opposition in Kakamega, Vihiga, and Busia, where there is no significant number of the Bukusu sub-tribe.
Picking Oparanya means Ruto will have to forget about Mt Kenya. However, this move will strengthen ODM because the party will secure the running mate slot.
The ticket could perform well in Nyanza, Western, Coast, Nairobi, and North Eastern which are traditional ODM strongholds and battlegrounds.
If the opposition picks Fred Matiang'i as the presidential candidate and Sifuna as the running mate, Ruto might take Gladys Wanga to solidify Luo Nyanza; otherwise, Matiang'i might win the whole Nyanza region. Both Western Kenya and Ukambani will then become battlegrounds.
