Matiang'i Makes a Sudden U-turn, Signal Readiness to Withdraw from Presidential Race

Jubilee Party presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i has indicated he could step aside from the 2027 presidential race if the opposition agrees on a single consensus candidate.

Matiang’i said he is ready to support a unified opposition front, stressing that the goal should not only be to defeat President William Ruto but also to present a credible alternative leadership for Kenyans.

Speaking amid intensified negotiations among opposition leaders, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the selection of a presidential flagbearer should be guided by competence, vision, and the ability to deliver solutions to the country’s challenges.

“Unseating President William Ruto is not our only agenda,” he said, signaling a shift in tone as opposition talks gain momentum.

The remarks come as key opposition principals including DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party boss Kalonzo Musyoka, PLP Party Leader Martha Karua and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa continue to position themselves for possible endorsement in the emerging coalition.
