A photo taken during the burial ceremony of the mother of Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has triggered fresh political speculation after it showed Winnie Odinga and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna sharing a light moment together in Kisii County.
The image, later shared by Sifuna on his X account, quickly attracted widespread attention online. In the photo, the two leaders appeared relaxed and cheerful during the high-profile funeral event attended by several prominent political figures from across the country.
Although the interaction appeared casual, political observers and supporters immediately connected it to the growing internal debates within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) over the party’s future political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna has recently emerged as one of the strongest voices opposing ODM’s growing cooperation with President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration. The Nairobi senator has repeatedly argued that ODM should maintain an independent opposition identity instead of appearing too close to the government.
On the other hand, Winnie Odinga, daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has largely avoided publicly taking sides in the ongoing disagreements within the party. Her appearance alongside Sifuna therefore immediately sparked speculation among supporters and political analysts.
The discussion intensified further after Winnie addressed mourners during the burial ceremony, where she criticized what she described as arrogance among some leaders in government and public office.
Without directly naming anyone, she urged leaders to focus on serving ordinary citizens instead of engaging in political confrontations and power struggles.
Her remarks came amid ongoing controversy involving Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi after Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga claimed he made remarks perceived as disrespectful toward the Odinga family during a recent ODM retreat.
Although Mbadi denied the allegations, the controversy has continued fueling discussions within ODM circles, particularly regarding succession politics and the party’s internal unity following Raila Odinga’s absence from active political leadership.
Political analysts now believe the photo of Winnie and Sifuna may further energize conversations about emerging alliances and possible leadership realignments within ODM.
As tensions continue simmering inside the opposition party, many supporters are increasingly watching closely for signals about who could shape ODM’s future political direction heading into the next election cycle.
