“Education Is My Number One Priority, Without It I Wouldn’t Be in Nairobi or Parliament,” Says Babu Owino

Babu Owino has reaffirmed that education remains his highest priority, emphasizing its critical role in transforming both individual lives and national development.

Speaking during an interview on Kameme FM on Friday, March 13, 2026, the Embakasi East legislator shared his personal story to highlight why education guides his policy focus and public service initiatives.

Owino recounted his journey from arriving in Nairobi in 2007 to pursuing higher education at the University of Nairobi (UON), explaining that educational opportunities enabled him to grow academically and politically.

“Mimi mambo na education napatia priority number one. Umbali nimefika ni kwa sababu ya elimu, na kama si elimu mimi singekuja Nairobi.

Mimi nilikuja Nairobi 2007, kama haingekua elimu pia singekua UON, wala singekua student leader, na singeenda Parliament,” Owino stated.

He highlighted that education gave him the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage in leadership roles, starting as a student leader at UON and eventually transitioning into national politics.

Owino stressed that education is not only a personal asset but also a tool for broader societal growth, empowering citizens to contribute meaningfully to the country’s progress.

The legislator emphasized that his commitment to education extends beyond personal experience and informs his work in Parliament.

He supports initiatives that improve access to quality learning, promote equity in education, and enhance facilities for students at all levels.

Owino believes that investing in education lays the foundation for a skilled workforce, innovation, and sustainable development.

Owino also drew attention to the challenges facing students and young people in Kenya, including financial barriers, limited infrastructure, and disparities in access between urban and rural areas.

He urged the government and stakeholders to prioritize policies that ensure every child and youth can pursue education without undue obstacles.

During the interview, Owino reflected on how education helped shape his values, decision-making, and leadership style.

He encouraged young people to view learning as a transformative journey that opens doors to opportunities and prepares them to serve their communities and country effectively.

Political analysts note that Owino’s emphasis on education resonates with his constituents, particularly the youth, who see him as a champion for access to learning and empowerment.

His advocacy aligns with national development goals, which recognize education as a key driver of economic growth and social cohesion.

Owino pledged to continue supporting programs that enhance educational outcomes, including scholarships, mentorship initiatives, and community learning projects.

He underscored the importance of creating an environment where young people can thrive academically and develop the skills needed for leadership and innovation.
