Babu Owino Gets Boost in Nairobi Governor Bid as Gathoni Wamuchomba Declares Support

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has received a significant political boost after Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba publicly endorsed his potential bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.

On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Wamuchomba took to her official social media platforms to express admiration for Owino’s recent message to Nairobi residents.

She praised the legislator for appealing to voters on the basis of merit and leadership ability rather than ethnic considerations.

According to Wamuchomba, Owino’s message stood out because it focused on competence, vision, and service delivery rather than the tribal politics that have often influenced elections in Kenya.

The outspoken legislator went further to say that if she were a voter in Nairobi, she would personally support Owino in the upcoming race for governor.

Her statement signaled strong personal backing and added momentum to early political discussions surrounding the 2027 contest.

Wamuchomba also urged Kenyans to move away from divisive ethnic politics and instead embrace unity and inclusive leadership.

She emphasized that leadership in the capital city should be determined by capability and commitment to public service.

In her remarks, the MP referred to Owino using the Kikuyu term “Muthoniwa,” which translates to “son-in-law,” a phrase often used to express acceptance and goodwill. She encouraged supporters to protect and support Owino’s political journey as he expands his ambitions beyond his parliamentary seat.

Babu Owino has served as the MP for Embakasi East since 2017 and has built a reputation as one of the country’s most outspoken lawmakers. Known for his bold political style, he has developed a strong grassroots following, particularly among young voters.

His potential bid for Nairobi governor comes amid growing debate about the management of the capital city.

Owino has previously argued that significant reforms are needed to improve service delivery, infrastructure, and governance in the county.

Political analysts say Wamuchomba’s endorsement could influence early perceptions of the race. As a prominent member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), her support for an opposition-leaning figure highlights the fluid alliances that often characterize Kenyan politics.

With the 2027 elections still some time away, several political leaders are already positioning themselves for key seats.

Endorsements such as Wamuchomba’s are expected to shape the early dynamics of the Nairobi gubernatorial race.
