The president posthumously conferred on Raila the highest honour in Kenya, the Chief of the Golden Heart of Kenya (CGH).
The departed politician, who passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, was laid to rest in a state funeral at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, on Sunday, October 19.
During the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui on Monday, October 20, President Ruto honoured Raila’s extraordinary contributions and enduring legacy.
The president, addressing the nation, announced the posthumous award, saying.
"The government and people of Kenya inscribe Hon Raila Odinga’s name among the foremost of our heroes, under the public seal of the Republic.
On behalf of a grateful nation, and through the authority vested in me as President, I have today posthumously conferred upon the Right Honourable
Raila Amolo Odinga the highest honour of the Republic, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (C.G.H.).
The notice highlighted his journey from his early years as a university lecturer, his long tenure in Parliament, his significant role in Cabinet, and his historic service as Kenya’s second Prime Minister.
It also acknowledged his role as both a government leader and the de facto Leader of the Opposition, underlining his central place in Kenya’s political history.
In addition to his political career, the gazette also emphasised Raila’s enduring legacy, noting that his life epitomised courage, endurance, sacrifice, and Pan-Africanism.
The President’s words in the gazette read:
"Throughout his life, whether in government or outside of it, Hon.
Raila Amolo Odinga exemplified courage, endurance, dedication, an unwavering commitment to the ideals of democracy and good governance, sacrifice, Pan-Africanism, and faithful service to all of humanity.”
Winnie took to social media to celebrate her father’s recognition, sharing the gazette notice and expressing her deep pride.
