Oburu Oginga Finally Speaks After Raila’s Death, Names the Kind of Leader Who Should Take Over

Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has dismissed speculation about who will take over Raila Odinga’s political mantle in Nyanza.

Insisting that the next regional kingpin will come from a new generation of leaders — not the late ODM leader’s age mates.

In his first interview since Raila’s death, Oburu said the focus should not be on installing a successor immediately but on allowing time for young leaders to rise naturally.

He acknowledged that Raila’s contribution to national politics was unmatched and that his era, along with that of his peers, had come full circle.

“From where I stand, Raila’s contemporaries should retire with him.

Leadership should now be handed to the younger generation who worked closely with him,” Oburu stated.

The veteran politician, who is currently steering ODM in an interim capacity, noted that Raila had mentored several youthful politicians.

who are now capable of carrying forward his legacy and vision.

He urged them to seize the moment ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The next polls are for the young people. They have the energy, the time, and the drive.

They must take charge, either by joining established parties or forming their own,” he advised.

Raila’s death earlier this month in India left the ODM party and Nyanza region in political uncertainty.

His passing ignited debate over the future of the party and who could unify his vast support base.

Even as factions within ODM argue over the party’s stance toward President William Ruto’s government.

Oburu maintains that Raila’s political blueprint remains intact but its next custodian will emerge from the youth he inspired, not his seasoned comrades.
